Jirang Trip – South Asia’s biggest Buddhist monastery

South Asia’s biggest Buddhist monastery ‘Padmasambhava Mahavihar’ at Jirang in Chandragiri. The 85 ft high five-storied Rigon Thumpten Mindroling Monastery, built on 10 acres of land at a cost of Rs 8 crore, houses a 21-foot-high Buddha idol with a massive prayer hall and place of worship with 200 resident monks, mostly from the Himalayas.

It took almost 10 years to complete it. Mahavihar is a tribute to the rich spiritual heritage, particularly to Buddhism in Orissa. It should be noted that the Tibetans came in exile and resettled here in 1966.

Soham Meaning

The baby boy name Soham comes from the Indian word which means, “I am.” Unknown word which means, “Other name of Lord Ganesha and/or Lord Shiva.” Sanskrit word which means, “Soham is a combination (Sandhi) of two sanskrit words Sah & Aham. It means that when a child is born it cries Koham-Koham which means Who am I. That is when The almighty Replies Soham. You are the same as I am..” Sanskrit word which means, “self pride.”

Someone also suggested the name is an Sanskrit word which means, “self pride.”

It is also the most powerful MANTRA in meditation and to become happy. Every human being on earth, regardless of their faith, color, age and nationality……CONSTANTLY chants this mantra from the beginning of the birth until they die,- but do not know how to focus on and take actual advantage of it. When you breathe…and if you close your eyes…it sounds Sooooo.. and when you exhale it makes a sound…hummmm. That’s whay it is “Soham” but pronounced “Sohum”. Try couple of minutes a day focusing on inhaling and exhaling with closed eye and see how you feel…

Soham is a small town in the English county of Cambridgeshire in the United Kingdom

Soham is an abstract mantra for meditation. It is a Guru mantra which we chant in order to achieve moksha.

Here So stands for Shiva and Hum stands for shakti. This mantra denotes that when Shiva expels shakti from his being, shakti starts manifesting the universe

Reverse of this is Hans mantra where hum comes first and sa (or so) comes later is the stage when shakti goes back to her source i.e. Shiva

both are very powerful mantras and lead to enlightenment

The carnatik popular raga Humsadhwani is named after this mantra.

Sanskrit phrase “soham asmi. “meaning “I am he”’ (i bid.) The names of Hindu gods and male saints (such as Hari, Nityananda, Caitanya !! Inextricably linked with hamsa (in Sanskrit), soham is a voiceless !!

Soham is combination of two words shiv + aham (means I) i.e. i am shiv .Following concept that everything is inside nothing is outside. This principle was totally followed by Swami Akhandandjee Maharaj of Akhandaashram.Chitrakoot was his head office..

Soham (so ‘ham सो ऽहम्) is the Sanskrit for “I myself” or “It is I” or “He is I”.

When it applies to a person’s name, according to Vedic philosophy it means identifying oneself with the universe or ultimate reality. Some say that when a child is born it cries Koham-Koham which means Who am I?. That is when the universe replies back Soham. You are the same as I am.. It also stems from the Sanskrit word which means, “self pride.”

When used for meditation, “Soham” acts as a natural mantra to control ones breathing pattern to help achieve deep breath and gain concentration.

  • Sooooo… is the sound of inhalation, and is remembered in the mind along with that inhalation.
  • Hummmm… is the sound of exhalation, and is remembered in the mind along with that exhalation.

Soham is also considered a mantra in Tantrism and Kriya Yoga, known also as Ajapa mantra, Ajapa Gayatri, Hamsa Gayatri, Hamsa mantra, prana mantra, Shri Paraprasada mantra, paramatma-mantra, and as such used notably on its own, in the meditation practice ajapa japaand in the kriya practice shabda sanchalana.[3]

The mantra is also inverted from so ‘ham (the sandhi of sa + aham) to ham + sa. The combination of so ‘ha hasa has also been interpreted as “I myself am the Swan“, where the swan symbolizes the Atman. A pseudo-etymology of hasa “swan, goose” (in fact cognate with English goose) as from aha sa “I am that” is found in the 14th century commentary on the Vedas by Sayana (14th century).

so ‘ham is an emphatic form of aham, the first person pronoun (“I”), translating to “I myself”. Interpreted as a nominal sentence, it can also be read as “It/He is I”. Its use as a mantra emerges in mystical Sanskrit literature of the medieval period. The mantra is sometimes claimed to originate with the Isha Upanishad (verse 16), which ends:

yat te rūpa kalyāatama tat te paśyāmi yo ‘sāv [asau purua] so ‘ham asmi

“The light which is thy fairest form, I see it. I am [that] what He is (viz. the person in the sun)”
